Chelsea Luker
Saxophone, Flute, Voice
A musician of many interests, Chelsea has carved her niche into several Portland performing groups writing, recording, singing, and playing saxophone, flute and guitar. As a teacher, she has been teaching private lessons for 25 years, as well as masterclasses in grade schools and high schools.
Chelsea began serious classical training on saxophone at the age of 11. After 8 years of studying with teacher, Sylvia Baker, she went on to receive her B.M. in Saxophone Performance at Florida State University with Patrick Meighan, participating in various classical festivals, and winning the Florida State Woodwind solo competition her senior year. Over the years, she had the privilege of meeting and studying with the world's leading modern saxophonists, including The Rascher Saxophone Quartet, Eugene Rousseau, Frederick Hemke, and many other up and coming performers.
Chelsea also discovered her love for performing in live bands while in college, and started her 1st professional rock/fusion group, Xingu. Xingu toured much of the Southeast US in their yellow school bus, and released one album, "Xinguism", that included her singing, playing and original compositions. Since then, she has performed and recorded with many Portland artists. Currently, she plays in The Quadraphonnes, the LaRhonda Steele Band, Moon Music and Mars Retrieval Unit. Past groups include JoyTribe, the Max Ribner Band, The Lily Wilde Orchestra, PigWar and a variety of tribute and cover bands. Many of her groups and solo efforts have performed and shared stages with great musicians including The Temptations, Robert Randolphe, Charles Neville, Karl Denson, Dumpstaphunk and Balkan Beat Box to name a few!
